Summertime with DMK – Solar Damage Gel for sun damage

It is summertime in South Africa and we should be protecting our skins from the harsh sun. Apart from using a good sunscreen with safe ingredients, we should have the know-how on how to treat the skin if it has been accidentally exposed and burnt by the sun.

When it comes to wrinkles, lines and sagging or loose skin, what many people consider to be the natural effect of ageing, is really caused by the sun.  Age spots commonly found on the hands and faces of people from the age of about 40 and older, should be called sun spots.

Over exposure to the sun can have the following negative effects:

  •  Uneven skin tone, dark spots or freckles
  •  Discoloration of the skin
  •  Loose sagging skin as a result of the destruction of elastin & collagen
  •  Wrinkles and fine lines
  •  Rough, coarse skin
  •  Decrease the ability to fight off infection and cancer
  •  Various types of skin cancer and tumours

The effects of ageing caused by the sun can be reversed to some extent but the greatest risk of all is skin cancer.  Exposure to the sun and even tanning beds are the biggest causes of skin cancer.

Severe sunburn before the age of 18 can contribute to the development of melanoma later on in life.

There are three types of skin cancer:  basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.  Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer as it can spread to other organs to become uncontrollable and causing death.

Treating the skin after sun exposure:

Solar Damage Gel can be used as a mask or as a moisturiser to restore skin that has been damaged by the sun, wind and weather.

It assists in restoring the collagen and elastin fibres by enhancing their ability to retain moisture. The gel is formulated to essentially restore the interstitial fluid of the epidermis, bringing hydration and vitality back to give the skin its firmness.

How to use:

On oily or slightly oily skins it can be used as your moisturiser.  Make sure to apply your sunscreen over.

For normal to dry or dry skin I would apply a thin layer of Solar Damage Gel under my normal moisturiser and sunscreen.

Use as a mask and leave for up to 30 minutes on cleansed and dry skin.  It can be left on overnight as well.

Apart from skin that is overexposed to sun, Solar Damage Gel can also be used for the following conditions:

  •  Premature ageing
  •  Weakened, dehydrated skin
  •  Dry, stressed, taut skin
  •  Sensitive or inflamed skin
  •  Burns or skin trauma
  •  Acne, congestion, scarring and stretch marks
